Tiger WoodsThe game of golf has become increasingly popular over the years and people have taken an interest in the professionals, likening them to Hollywood stars and other notable professional sports players that have tended to receive more attention in the past.

Check out our list of golfer baby names for your sporty tot. Perhaps, you'll find a hole-in-one to name your golf-lover-in-the-making.

Golf lovers may notice that the game seeps into their lives in many ways: a putt-putt course in their backyard, that certain "golfer" attire — on and off the course — and perhaps even in how they name their children. With so many amazing golfers out there, it is only natural that a golf aficionado may turn to some of the top players for inspiration when seeking out the perfect golfer baby name for their little one.

In a recent article posted on ESPN.com, Shawn Peters compiled a list of the top 50 golfers. A few of the names are traditional names (Mike Weir, Jerry Kelly and John Senden, for example), but there are several on the list that might just pique your interest.

Baby Boy Golfer Names

The top one you might imagine we'd suggest is — you guessed it, Tiger (as in Tiger Woods, of course). But did you know that his real first name is actually Eldrick? Well, it was at birth anyway. The young golf phenom eventually legally changed his name to Tiger, however.

In 2007 Rory Sabbatini was considered to be one of the best putters on the PGA TOUR and finished second at The Masters. If you're looking for a "winning" name, Rory should be at the top of your list.

Hunter Mahan was called a "sure thing" (besides Tiger, naturally!) in the latter half of the 2007 season. A fringe player, he recently won the Traveler's Championship, followed by three top 10's in a row.

A few other male golfer names to consider from Peters' list: Brandt (Snedeker), Zach (Johnson) — or think about a variation on spelling here, such as Zak or Zack — Woody (Austin), Geoff (Ogilvy), Ernie (Els), Padraig (Harrington), Luke (Donald), and Heath (Slocum).

Baby Girl Golfer Names: Legendary Ladies of the Links

Don't forget the girls hit the greens, too. Some of the most popular women in golf have some pretty cool names to pick from… whether they are known more for their swing or their "curves." In fact, according to Golf.com, "Today's stars are selling not only their record but their… body of work." A few ladies that were voted by Golf.com as "Sexiest Women Golfers" include:

Natalie Gulbis, who is considered to be the "poster girl" for sexy golfers, also made FHM Magazine's list of 100 Sexiest Women of 2007. Sophie Sandolo, Anna Rawson, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Carin Koch, and Grace Park are a few others that Golf.com mentions.

About.com ranked female golfers as well, looking at their stunning golf ability over their superficial looks. Of course Annika Sorenstam topped the list because of her history of posting great numbers in some of the most competitive fields in women's golf. Others on this list include Mickey (Wright), Kathy (Whitworth), Babe Didrikson (Zaharias), and Nancy Lopez.

So when you're out on the greens, you might want to start mulling over some of these popular names. Just think — how you name your child may just solidify his or her destiny as a future golfing great!
