Would you name your daughter after your favorite makeup, sports channel or... canned fruit?! Some mother and father fans are doing just that. According to psychology professor Cleveland Evans, who studies naming trends, L'Oreal, ESPN and Del Monte, are, in fact, real names bestowed upon newborns. In fact, says Evans, who teaches at Nebraska's Bellevue University, the trend is no different from when 19th-century parents named their children Ruby or Opal. "It reflects [parents'] aspirations," Evans told the BBC, which reported the news. An interesting thought to consider, in light of records Evans uncovered for Social Security cards registered with names like ESPN and L'Oreal, though naming babies after cars seems to be the norm in this trend.
Such names may aim to reflect a family's true (or desired) social status, but it also shows that particular brands' marketing attempts to grab your attention are working-perhaps in a way even advertisers couldn't have anticipated! Either way, whether the trend of baby brand names sticks is up to parents-to-be like you. To help you decide, here is a list of some names that have transitioned from brands to babies...
